The only protected Florida insect is the
endangered Schaus' swallowtail butterfly (
Papilio (=Heraclides) aristodemus ponceanus).
This black butterfly, with a wingspan of 3¼-3¾", looks much like a Giant Swallowtail but has all black tails with a yellow border and a narrower yellow wing band.
Schaus' swallowtails, once common in the Miami area, are now found only in wooded areas on the northern islands of the Florida Keys.
