Bill Pranty, bird guru and author of
A Birder's Guide to Florida, is currently doing a project to survey and map
Monk Parakeet nests in Florida.
Monk Parakeets, also known as Quaker Parrots, are medium-sized birds. They are primarily green with a grayish-white throat and breast. They build large communal nests of sticks. Utility poles and palm trees are common nest sites.
If there are any monks in your area or you are interested in the project, please visit the
Florida Monk Parakeet Survey and Mapping Project. The site is very informative about Monks in general and also has photos, a map of reported sightings, a form for submitting your sightings, and a link to the project's mailing list.
